Quitting 9-5
I have always known that I would never take a traditional career path. In a “big girl” job interview I was asked what would be my dream job if money wasn’t real. I said I would run a coffee shop where I could curate a space that inspired creativity and community. I just knew I would be my own boss where I could be unapologetically myself and work as freely as I wanted. However, my inner Capricorn guilted me down a safer road to success.
The Great Resignation
The pandemic was a matter of feast or famine and I was about to learn what it was like to experience the former. As a Project Manager for a not-for-profit tech company, I was comfortable working with a startup-sized team but within a year there were over 50 of us. As our small team left the office in March with this eerie expectation that we would be back soon, I had no idea that the next two years would break me.
I am an overachiever by nature. I do not give up easily and I will do everything in my power to prove my capabilities. I did everything I could to be the best at my job. I sought out professional development courses. I was promoted within a year to a manager position. I ran a small team and interns. I talked all day long in meetings, events, and networking. I was praised for my endless positivity.
It came as a huge surprise when I called a meeting with my bosses to discuss my declining mental health, burnout, and concerns for my team's mental health. I did everything in my power to ask for help, delegate my work, and balance my life with my work and yet I came to a breaking point. I could no longer provide endless positivity.
I Quit.
My intuition is my driving force. It was telling me that it was time to create that dream job I always wanted. It didn’t have to be a coffee shop but it had to be mine, on my terms. My mental health was far more important than the societal success I was told to pursue. Even writing this now I get emotional thinking about how devasted my past self was with how things turned out.
GOLD STUDIO is my dream job. It is the coffee shop I aspire to have one day. It is a place for community. A place to create without limitations.
